Trivial

Very tired, but must make a mental note to read more of Unwilling Self-Negation, a blog by Ali whatshisface.

I don't agree with everything he says, but that's hardly a requirement for appreciating a well-written and thoughtful blog. He emailed me a month ago, I think. Should probably reply and tell him he's interesting. Or not.

time to take a survey!

how many aqoulites would be Eerie's Mameluke?

if you don't respond, i assume that your answer is "yes."

Depends. How are the health benefits?

Posted by: Tom Scudder at April 21, 2006 06:15 AM

The health benefits of being Eerie's Mameluke? Well, regular aerobic exercise has substantial health benefits, or so I'm told.

Posted by: Eva Luna at April 21, 2006 10:04 AM

Hmm, was not expecting this.

However, the benefits are quite substantial and extend well beyond healthcare.

Not that I'm advertising. Merely adding substance to the hypothetical scenario.

On a different tangent, here's that Walid bin Calvin Klein face-out display. Pure taste, is what it is.

Posted by: Tom Scudder at April 21, 2006 11:54 AM

What does that mean, eerie's Mamlouk? Isn't that me?

Posted by: The Lounsbury at April 22, 2006 12:46 AM

Nonsense, you don't do whatever I say.

Posted by: eerie [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 12:53 AM

dear drdougfir et.al.-

"mamluuk" means "owned". as in "someone's legal property".

i'd have to give that a pass.

too proud, too free, too arrogant.

i'd be happy to help procuring them for our malikat (al-)'aqoul though ...

So what's the proper translation of "PWNED"?

Posted by: Tom Scudder at April 22, 2006 02:09 PM

Tom, you beat me to it!

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at April 22, 2006 02:39 PM

dear tom,

unfortunately (i guess?) i don't know what "p.w.n.e.d." stands for. is it an abbreviation? "pussy-whipped & neutered"?

WHY would you need to know THAT in arabic? to insult someone? to explain your relationship situation? good god, PLEASE don't let it be #2!

Raf - it's leet (also occasionally spelled "PWN3D"). It originated as a typo for "owned", and means "defeated utterly in some sort of contest" as in "ZOMG dood I totally pwned ur ass". I guess I could have suggested you look it up on wikipedia.

Posted by: Tom Scudder at April 22, 2006 07:11 PM

we could title this thread "the education of Raf"

and, it's actually spelled 1337, not leet.

dear tom et.al.,

i have an idea for what you could do with all that free time on your hands: do a study on arabic slang in the gaming community. it should be easy - just hang out at the internet/gaming places & interview the kids.

you could even get a wider sample by doing case studies in jbeel, trablus, saida ... oh, and don't forget the hizbi gamers in nabatiyyeh & baalbek!

head over to damascus to integrate the syrian bloggers into your study ...

yalla, off you go!
