Trip Photos & Commentary

I'm sick of Lebanon. There is no point in following it obsessively hour by hour because I'm not learning anything new beyond confirming my existing belief that rampant demagoguery and short-term gratification (political or emotional) has driven everyone in the region insane (oh I'm sure the war has its own internally consistent logic that allows for children to get blown up in service of some greater good but let's get a grip here).

So once again, a trivial and self-indulgent distraction: photos and commentary on my trip to the Dominican Republic.

First, some remarks on why I chose the island. My trip was in no way intended to be a cultural or intellectual experience, unlike previous vacations to Spain or Egypt. I quite literally chose my destination by filling out a search form with a price range, star rating and general location (Caribbean). Amusingly, the travel agency map made it look as though DR was the entire island by conveniently neglecting to label the oh-so-unmarketable Haiti next door.

Still, I managed to stumble upon an American expat who gave me a bit of insight into the political and economic conditions (yes, I am eccentric enough to strike up conversations about these things with complete strangers, particularly after a few drinks). It seems that the current president is interested in major infrastructure projects, and has promised to pave every road on the island, rebuild downtown areas and install new sewage systems. Haitians, who are largely responsible for mass-producing souvenirs and other schlock sold to tourists (e.g. paintings, clay figurines) are being brought over by the truckload to work on these projects and other labour-intensive jobs.

In general, the (ostensibly democratic) government appears to be something of a large graft operation, of the sort you might see in Sub-Saharan Africa. A friend of mine told me that his vacation to the Dominican some years back was ruined by the presence of military helicopters and heavily armed soldiers roaming the beaches. Apparently, transitions from one president to another don't go very well, and the outgoing politicians can be rather spiteful. The previous head of state, upon hearing that he would not be re-elected, decided not to pay the country's energy bill (power comes largely from private producers), causing them to shut off electricity to the entire island for almost two weeks.

Now the actual resorts themselves are like little enclaves of paradise situated amidst shanty towns and poorly-developed urban areas. Based on the self-contained nature of my own resort (it even had a medical center), I had the strong sense that tourists were discouraged from leaving the resort "villages" and exploring nearby towns. I wasn't terribly interested in venturing out to see the slums and markets myself, partly because I was alone but mostly because I hadn't done any research on the area and found the local Spanish dialect to be largely incomprehensible.

I also noticed a nasty tendency towards colour stratification (fairly common in postcolonial countries). Lighter skinned Dominicans were found largely in customer service jobs, while darker ones (including black Haitians) were relegated to maintenance and labour. One of my constant companions, a 6' black girl from NYC, mentioned that the hotel staff were a bit more aloof with black guests, regardless of their nationality.

In any case, I'm sure all of you are really here for the photos.

Is that an Ipod?

Could be my ipod or cellphone, they look nearly identical from a distance. Which photo?

That's quite a tan. I'd never have taken you to be the sort of person to wear a plastic bracelet though.

Looks like the room key to me.

It's the all-inclusive bracelet. Identifies the hotel and the package type.

Without one, too easy for other people to wander into the hotel and start getting free drinks, etc.

Gosh, that bracelet looks like what they put on you at frat parties in college. The strawberry daiquiri looks divine - I've recently discovered how good daiquiris can be in hot weather.

It sounds like you did far too much political-social thinking on your vacation. Tsk.

nice bracelet, E. *smirk*

and LOVELY tan! you could be mistaken for a leb pop-tart with a bit too much sun to make her appealing to the arabsats. yum!

Yes, I don't give a fuck about the whiteness=beauty neurosis that turns so many Eastern girls into tan-phobics. I spent 4-5 hours in the water every day, no way to avoid tanning.

Scandinavians and Germans kept asking me if I put anything on my skin to get such a nice colour. Of course, by the end of the week most of them looked like lobsters or distressed leather bags.

Clearly there is a market for bronze girls. Let the others continue cowering under their umbrellas to please the fairness-obsessed wankers.

Posted by: eerie [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 2, 2006 12:23 PM

i am most certainly part of the bronze market segment. the truely pale females from scandinavia do appeal but tan looks so much more healthy.

what percentage non-euro are you again? 50%?

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 2, 2006 12:26 PM

I agree. Non-white girls without tans often look sallow. Even a bit of colour is nice.

Re percentage: I am rarely pegged as a European of any kind, but some of my ancestors did consort with infidels.

Perhaps why I'm so fond of Catholic boys.

infadels of which stripe?

it appears that i'm related to every group of infadels ever to be called infadels.

While I'm all in favour of the bronzed look and like to sneer at fairness-obsessed Eastern women just as much as anyone, it should be noted that no-one, however naturally melanin-endowed, is immune from skin cancer. Bob Marley died of a melanoma, remember.

Self Tanner Is the Solution.

"Could be my ipod or cellphone"

So you do have an ipod. Sellout.

Posted by: Ali K at August 2, 2006 01:09 PM

SP: self tanner is the antichrist.

Ali K: agreed. E is a sellout.

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at August 2, 2006 02:03 PM

it should be noted that no-one, however naturally melanin-endowed, is immune from skin cancer.

All things in moderation. As long as both the sun and DNA continue to exist, there is a risk of skin cancer.

Too little sun and one has to start putting vitamin D in milk to prevent rickets/osteoporosis. Sunlight is not inherently evil and is in fact rather important from a physiological perspective.

Self tanner is fucking awful, stinky, streaky, orangey disgusting stuff. I would find it terribly ironic if the active ingredient turned out to be carcinogenic.

And what does an ipod have to do with "selling out"? Bloody hipsters. When my last HD blew, I managed to back up the whole thing on my ipod in a few minutes. The fact that it plays mp3s is gravy.

> Sunlight is not inherently evil and is in fact rather important from a physiological perspective.

Well, yes, not evil, but some of us burn rather more viciously than others. Fifteen minutes of solid, mid-day sun is enough to bring on hints of unpleasantness for my particular person.

Stupid genetics.

That must be why they've come out with SPF60 sunscreen.
