The Show Us Your Desktop Meme

Am staying in today, trying to avoid the Christmas shopping pandemonium consuming this otherwise orderly city. While continuing to feed my ghoulish obsession with genocide (currently reading Dallaire, Power) and mucking about on 'Aqoul as usual, I came across a new meme: Show Us Your Desktop. Obviously it involves taking a screenshot of one's desktop and posting it for the purpose of inviting low value, cretinous commentary (yes, still laughing at L's drive-by yesterday).

Desktop

There you go, my beloved cretins.

Staying in?

Does this mean you're not working toward world domination today, or shall us cretins assume this is merely a distractive ploy to lull us into a false comraderie?

Stop having fun, you! Be interested in what *I* am interested in!

Pout pout. I am a poor baby. *evil grin*

I change mine almost daily, with photos snatched off public hosting sites like Pbase and Webshots. Today it's this little favorite ( stetched to 1600x1200 ) :

Awesome, eh? :)

Blue: Actually, I suffer from acute ennui. Spending lots of money on silly things does not distract like it used to.

Tam: Bloody yikes.

Unrelated: For those who know what I look like, should I get caramel & brown highlights? [Example]

Tired of jet black.

Posted by: eerie [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 17, 2006 10:34 PM

E: stay jet-black.

i assume your background is from (the temple complex name escapes me) in Luxor?

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 18, 2006 10:38 AM

Hmm you think so? Am rather bored of jet black (although it is fairly low maintenance).

Background is from Luxor/Karnak area. I took the photo but can't remember exact location anymore.

I prefer jet black. If I were making the decision for you, I'd say stick with it.

However I'm sure the Jessica Alba thing would work fine as well ( I think you might be a tad darker than her, but not much ). So if that's the way you want to go, I doubt people will spit in disgust ;).

Dear e,

the pic is from the entrance hall of the Karnak Temple in Luxor, the one that is supposed to resemble a forrest.

Get the highlights.

e: to reiterate, don't do the highlights. we don't need you looking like Britney Spears pre-children. http://www.hissandpop.com/celebrities/s/britneyspears/photos/britney-spears-007.jpg

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2006 09:35 AM

Well, I am somewhat concerned about looking like a bimbo/Lebslut/whatever.

Posted by: eerie at December 19, 2006 11:21 AM

then stick with the jet black. it's suave and sexy.

plus if you carameled your hair, we'd demand photos incessantly.

Posted by: drdougfir [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2006 11:39 AM

Reminds me, my entire wardrobe is geared towards black hair (long black coats, black boots, grey/black tops, elegant minimalist).

I'd have to start buying more neutrals and frilly things if I went golden brown.

Bugger, this is far more complicated than throwing some money at a colorist and sitting in a chair for two hours.

Posted by: eerie [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 19, 2006 01:41 PM

well, you certainly can throw money at a colorist and not bother with a new wardrobe but do you really want to not match?

regardless, we deserve a "before" photo.

Re hair, do what makes you happy. Screw everyone else. Hair color does not a slut make. See also: dressing slutty, acting slutty.

And anyway, what's wrong with a nice slut? Well, except for perception and the attached social politics... Of course that's what double lives are for.

Re ennui, been there. Esp. impossible to shop for people (but "gourmet" food always seems to work in a pinch). I holiday shop online, ship all the shit directly "home". True, that's technically required now (given the geography), but at this point I think I'd do it all online anyway. Although, I *did* always rather enjoy playing the game of weaving through the sluggish manatee people as fast as possible in a crowded spaces.

Posted by: blue92 at December 19, 2006 11:28 PM

Well, am vaguely concerned that the colour will make me appear less intelligent, etc. Men are visual creatures and often...hmm, forget...about the prize inside if the packaging looks a certain way.

So it comes down to the kind and quality of attention I'd like to receive. Finding the right balance is difficult (nice packaging is still important)

Also, "sluggish manatee people" sounds hilarious

DrDoug: You'll just have to be satisfied with that blurry Shelfari pic.

Well, am vaguely concerned that the colour will make me appear less intelligent, etc.

Understood, though that phenomena can also work to your advantage--not that you aren't perceptive enough to ferret out the utter morons from the passingly lovable dolts most are forced to settle for, but rather it is simply less time-consuming when idiocy is triggered to advertize itself. (e.g. people who are too serious about their 'dumb blonde' stereotypes)

Men are visual creatures and often...hmm, forget...about the prize inside if the packaging looks a certain way.

. . . .(nice packaging is still important)

As one who takes the long view on these sorts (well, many sorts) of things, packaging is merely for salesmanship. It's the box your software comes in--irrelevant beyond that it serves the basic function of initial attraction (in other words, is at least not so repulsive as to warrant complete dismissal).

I'm sure this is belaboring the obvious, but, all elements taken into consideration, the largest importance in self-presentation is how it makes you feel about yourself--because you are the one who has to live with it. If X makes you feel too uncomfortable for whatever reason, don't do it. If you'd enjoy it and can rightfully tell everyone with a problem to fuck off, do that. (Not that there aren't consequences to extraordinary displays in whatever form, but we're hardly talking about major lifestyle changes... and you don't strike one as too much of an attention whore.) Moreover, given the typical specimens you've thus far documented here from your various social encounters, it hardly seems like you could possibly decrease the pool quality significantly by a mere hair color change.

From the few images I've seen of you, I'd say you would be considered quite attractive ("hot", in the purely analytical form) within the bounds of either decision. If anything, you might simply try the different color temporarily for experimental purposes--being careful of any possible confirmational biases, of course.

i do believe Blue is hitting on you, E.

don't do the highlights. remain mysterious with jet black hair.

Well, I do enjoy careful analysis regardless.

I'm rarely uncomfortable with my outer appearance, it is as you suggested, a tool of sorts. What preoccupies me is attracting the right audience segment, not everyone. One difference between Kitten and I is that she enjoys attention from any guy as long as he's handsome and polite, whereas I have a tendency to get bored if looks aren't accompanied by at least a faint glimmer of intelligence. Modifying certain elements of my manner/appearance might deter the idiots and attract the...not-idiots. Theoretically.

However, I think venturing even slightly into blonde territory will have the opposite effect. At least with jet black, nobody ever assumes I'm perky and bubbly.

Ah well, may try it if the impulse strikes. Can easily dye it black again.

Posted by: eerie [TypeKey Profile Page] at December 22, 2006 06:22 PM

don't dye your hair. if you want a change that bad, cut it short.
