Reflections on Caramel

So, I finally booked an appointment to see Kitten's colorist. Poor bastard spent about 2.5 hours inserting fine caramel highlights amidst the jet black, to avoid doing an all-over bleaching. My hair is now a golden-brown shade, not unlike the color I had as a toddler.
Overall, I'd say it makes me look less "sharp" and probably a bit friendlier. Certainly gets more attention than jet black.
The photo above was taken by some guy at a club we attended last night. Lovely place, very decadent. Somewhat steep cover - obviously priced to exclude the ill-mannered grabby male crowd. A Kitten Club member had invited us along (her friend's birthday) and I ended up meeting some vaguely interesting people, including a meteorologist who does the weather on a news network here.
Now before you all start cackling like morons, keep in mind that news shows here are desperately trying to attract a wider audience, which means stacking the news lineup with young hotties. In any case, the reason I liked him was because he actually does all the forecasting himself, and uses badass computers to model weather patterns, etc.
Of course the Kitten Club found Weatherman terribly amusing due to the endless potential for stupid jokes (e.g. "E, what's the forecast for tomorrow?" *wink*)
Anyway.

It looks lovely. But I'm afraid that's the worst effort at pixellation I've ever seen. You may as well just post your personal genome map to the web.

Well, too much and the photo is ruined.

Idea: Make a separate section of the blog where you dress up in hot/weird/interesting outfits and post the pics on a semi-regular basis, a la The Sartorialist. I'm sure even lounsbury would warm to it eventually.

Oh, I doubt that.

Nice hair. Triceps need work. You are tall.
Posted by: zenpundit at January 15, 2007 12:55 AM
I thought there was a decent chance you'd give it a try.
Good show.

I assure you, I shall not warm to such things.
And yes, eerie is not a shrimp.
Ah, and Kitten is the little blonde creature in the foreground.

Indeed, I am fairly tall in heels. 5'10" or so.

180cm with heels? what are you without?

Hmm, so the caramel highlights (or are they lowlights?) produce an overall J.Lo-ish kinda bronzey brown? I'm not seeing much golden in that picture. Is rare to find caramelly hair colours that don't have a bit of orange, which happens to look hideous with jet black hair.

DrDoug: 180cm with heels? what are you without?
Dunno, 5'7/5'8? I'm usually wearing heels.
SP: Highlights were caramel, but the foils were packed extremely close together so the effect is a fine blend of caramel/gold and black. Like JLo, but I don't think her lowlights are black.
As for the tendency for black hair to bleach orange, that has to do with not lifting the base enough (hair goes red, then goes blonde, then gets fried). My highlights were first lifted to pale blonde, then colored down to caramel.

If you were in heels, we could almost see eye to eye. Albeit, perhaps not politicaly speaking.
The background in the photo speaks of urban hipster - suburbanite intermingling.

Yes, there is a saying among downtowners: "Those people are so 905" (referring to the area code for far-flung suburbs).

Now I have visions of retiring, buying a night-club on the edge of the city, and calling it "The Cross-Breeder". Right next to the hotel with the "day rate".
I mean, hookers need a place to drink just like everybody else, and one assumes they usually need to drink a lot.

905: In NYC, we used to call 'em the bridge & tunnel crowd.
Of course, that's me now. But then again, I'm not clubbing anymore.
As Chris Rock observed, best reason for a man to get married is so that he doesn't wind up as the oldest guy in the club. Truer words were never spoken...

Ah, I am now enlightened on grown-up hair colour. It looks really good on you and may just change my lifelong aversion to colour on black hair.
Speaking of B&T/suburban vs urban hipster crowds, how can you tell anyone there is suburban? Is it the stripey blue male shirt?
Posted by: SP at January 17, 2007 06:19 AM
Well, with highlights you get what you pay for. Colors should be matched to skin tone/eyebrows beforehand. Also, they should be arranged in a flattering way (frame the face, darker on the underside, etc). Results in a sort of quasi-natural look.
In general though, if you're planning to go more than 2 shades lighter/darker (highlights or color), definitely see a professional.
Re suburbans, they are either trying too hard (overdressed) or dressed too casually (as if going to a small town bar).

i'm glad i don't go to clubs.

"905" is being used for the outer fringes of New York? I thought that was only Toronto's suburbs... Is it?
Posted by: dawud at January 22, 2007 05:17 AM
Contrary to popular belief, I am not a New Yorker.
