Bookish Things

Picked up a number of books today, for business and pleasure. In no particular order:

Infidel
Yes, I bought the Hirsi Ali memoir, largely in response to Lounsbury's post (and Economist review, which I thought rather more fair and balanced than the saccharine glurge I just saw in the NYT). She'll be in my neck of the woods sometime soon for a book signing, wonder if I should make an appearance?

Wikinomics
This book seems to be rather popular in some circles I travel in, and my work is sending me to a talk by one of the authors. Appears to cover Web 2.0 (collaboration, social networking) and associated value proposition, impact analysis, etc. Looks interesting.

Creature of Habit

Real lifers may be aware of my tendency to frequent certain places downtown for takeout food, coffee and so on. One Starbucks in particular is a favorite haunt for studying and quiet time. Since I have a compulsion to be polite, I'm on friendly terms with all of them (with the side benefit of always being able to find a seat). None are captivating enough for me to pursue as friends outside of Starbucks, but they are useful on those rare occasions where I actually feel like talking to others.

Valentine's Day Rot

I was browsing the card store today (vainly trying to avoid the hordes of anxious-looking men sifting through ghastly pink and red monstrosities, aka "expressions of love") and noticed the most ridiculous card category ever:

From the Dog (Valentine)

Why the hell would you buy a Valentine card and pretend it's from the dog? Are they intended to be from one dog to another? What is the bloody point of this? Reminds me of that Mr. Bean episode where he fills out a bunch of Christmas cards himself and then pretends they're from other people.

I suppose it's the next logical step after dressing one's dog up in designer parkas, booties and elaborate Hallowe'en costumes (there is nothing more ridiculous than a small dog dressed as a bat, or a bumblebee).
