When one has no free time...
...one begins to do strange things like redo an entire livingroom in the space of a few days.
It began with an odd compulsion to throw out almost all my existing furniture one night around 3AM. Not necessarily a bad thing - my friends have long joked about my spartan, Flight Club-esque decorating sense (yes, a lot of Ikea stuff left over from college days). Once the place was emptied out, they began to remark on the echo as a perfect accompaniment to my impoverished fridge (which contains a bottle of ketchup, a box of baking soda and a tub of margarine dating back to the Middle Kingdom).
Eventually, I grew tired of the vampire jokes.
A few days later, I came across a mom-and-pop furniture store with a deliciously evil name (one of Satan's aliases). Mostly imports with a lot of massive, heavy pieces. Just inside the door stood an 8 foot tall acacia wood bookcase. It was dark and imposing, with an antique front carved with flowers and birds. Love at first sight. I ended up buying a number of similarly styled pieces there, including a dark coffee table with a wrought-iron design set in carved wood.
Uncharacteristically, I also purchased accessories like throw pillows, blankets, a crimson wool rug and some fat candles. (candles! me!)
I know it sounds a bit gothic and scary but the overall effect is rather cozy and inviting. I suppose it's no surprise that I'd choose reds, browns and black - just look at Aqoul.
Oh, and I chopped 6 inches of my hair off on Saturday. Another strange, spontaneous act with pleasant results.

Candles? Next thing we hear, you'll be inviting people overfor dinner parties. (Or at least cocktails - less kitchen infrastructure needed.)

You say "vampire" like draining the blood of innocents is a "bad" thing.

For you, it's furniture. Lately for me, it's been scuba equipment. Perhaps we both should consider slowing down.
Incidentally, there are some lovely adverts for cottage dining tables, solid wood country cherry modular desks, and French country sideboard buffets on both the left and right sides of the page.

One of my enduring marital complaints is that my darling wife wants everything light and bright, whereas I like things dark and cozy.
Fortunately, she hates gardening. The backyard isn't dark, but it is enclosed and intricate. If it were up to her, it'd be all grass.
